The Municipal council is the highest decision-making and supervisory body of the city in matters within its own sphere of influence. It is elected every six years by the residents of the City of Innsbruck who are entitled to vote and consists of 40 members.

Tasks of the municipal council
The municipal council is the supreme decision-making body of the city in matters relating to its own sphere of activity. The mayor chairs the municipal council.
Its duties are defined in § 18 of the Innsbruck municipal law.
The municipal council has committees. They discuss selected topics for the municipal council. They are political instruments for forming opinions, to which experts are also invited.
The municipal council can also hold inquiries to obtain information on a specific topic.

Municipal council inquiries
The municipal council can hold an inquiry at the request of at least 14 members of the municipal council. Experts and persons providing information are heard or their written statements are obtained. Inquiries can only be held on matters within the council's own sphere of influence. This refers to matters that the municipal council can also decide on. Unless the municipal council decides otherwise, inquiries are public.
